Clock restoration and repair

We are clockmakers. We restore and repair virtually all types of clock in our own workshop in Wagenberg. We deal with maintenance and restoration of both the movement and the case and everything else that belongs to an object. For this we cooperate with our highly qualified colleagues who are masters of the required skills.

Clocks have a history, and often people have worked on them before, all with their own vision and work methods. This sometimes causes surprises, not always positive. We endeavour to bring the clock back to its former glory whilst retaining the maximum number of authentic parts. It remains an antique clock with a long life behind it.

The movement

The movement is entirely disassembled. Wear and tear is eliminated.

All the pivots are highly polished so that there is minimal friction when they run in their bearings. A worn pivot hole is rebushed and broached to size. This results in the wheels engaging optimally. Bushes are installed in such a way that this is hardly visible. All other problems and irregularities are dealt with.

After the job is done all parts are checked and cleaned following which the movement is reassembled, oiled and adjusted. At this point the checking period begins and the clock is adjusted until it indicates the time as accurately as possible once more.

During the restoration process details of the movement are recorded. All pieces are photographed and the movement data are recorded in worksheet. We have a library at our disposal with a database, documentation and technical data of movements. This is useful when a similar movement arrives with one or more parts missing, which then can be made on the basis of our archived information.

If possible, we deliver the clock personally after the restoration process is completed, set it up and adjust it. The work done comes with a three-year guarantee.

Cooperation, responsibility and timeliness

We work together with colleagues in different fields. A wooden case goes to a furniture restorer. An enamel or painted dial goes to another specialist. Other work to be done may include engraving, chasing, casting, gilding, etc., each dealt with by the relevant specialist. This means our work is multi-facetted, as we are involved with all aspects of the restoration process.

In short, we are a flexible company which can deliver a responsible restoration for virtually all clocks. The restoration period is kept to a minimum and a target set, but of course the process requires time, particularly when other craftsmen are needed to carry out specific jobs. We are in control of the whole process and in this way the client will have his antique treasure back within a reasonable period of time.

Whatever is the matter, we will deal with it.

Specialism

We are able to restore almost any clock. There is not much that cannot be repaired.

Joost is specialised in early clocks (16th and 17th centuries) and complicated restorations. Restoring early objects often involves learning old techniques first. In the old days it was perfectly normal for a craftsman to spend all day at the anvil or to engrave all the time. Nowadays this is no longer the case. We continue to acquire and practise these skills once applied so much, that we can solve most problems. This is actually quite enjoyable as it makes our trade so versatile.

Maintenance

All movements need a service every 4-5 years, when the salient points are once more oiled or greased. This prevents bearings running dry which would cause excessive and unnecessary wear. Even if the clock is still running, this small periodic service is advisable. The cost is fairly modest and your clock will run longer before a more comprehensive service is due. A small service can often be carried out on the spot and minor problems can be dealt with at the same time.
